Revell 1/72 Leopard 2A5/A5NL **completed*** (by Murad Özer)

After the roadwheel and tracks incident the real fun part came in where i continued with painting the rest of the camo. First coats of the hull topside:

Decals etc are applied, however at the very last moment i noticed paint chipping off from the barrel of the main gun so i decided to remove the paint altogether via wet fine sandpaper. The grey portion infront of the barrel is primer actually, waiting to be painted at the time of these shots.
Slight Weathering/dirt and highlighting visible on the sideskirts as well as over various other parts of tank are done via very thin VA Neutral Grey mixed with VA Medium Grey applied generously over the surfaces, almost soaking them, then removing the excess water via large brush in concert with tissue paper. Result is whatever paint pigment left in the wash getting sucked into the panel lines during removal process due to capillary action.
I also decided to cover the muzzle itself, used household kitchen aluminium foil for the job. I wanted to depict this tank in parking / transit over a trailer of Faun or a railroad car, hence the muzzle cover and the clamp on the gun barrel with the turret facing backwards in most of the shots:

And the final:

Overall i enjoyed the build itself and had fun painting it tremendously, this kit is most definitely recommended - kudos to Revell!
I will continue building more Bundeswehr equipment Revell is offering in 1/72 to hone my skills with miniafv building as well as painting the 3 tone NATO camo, so c’ya all next time.

Revell 1/72 Leopard 2A5/A5NL (by Murad Özer)

Hi dear friends,

We have a new member, Murat Ozer ... Tell me his story himself ..
Enjoy....
Erhan..

***

Hello all, my name is Murad and this will be my very first submission to "miniafv" I'm returning to this hobby and slowly getting back into the saddle after a very lengthy hiatus, so big huge thanks to Mr. Erhan for letting a rookie modeller in here among the pros! :)

My model here is a Revell Leopard 2a5/a5nl (03187) kit in 1/72 scale. I like Leo2 the most among them modern main battle tanks (mbt) and it’s 3 tone NATO camo, which is perfectly suitable for my hand brushing abilities, the Bundeswehr is using is another favorite of mine, these are why i went for this particular mbt.

Ok off we go, here you can see the assembled Leo2 hull sitting right next to it's older brother, a what-if? German Panther used as a paintjob testbed:

While the fit and the quality of the kit was very good overall, the plastic was a little bit on the brittle side - instead of flexing, chunks of plastic would burst upon careless removal from the sprues!

Axles are attached and the turret itself is assembled, first dryfit trials of this one mean looking mbt:

I am using VAllejo for the primer and it's Model Color line for the acrylic paints. According to the public sources on the net the colors for this particular NATO camo are listed as RAL 6031 (green), RAL 8027 (brown) and RAL 9021 (black).
For their VAllejo counterparts i used these respectively: 97, 147 and 170.
Initially i went with 95 for the green (wheel wells entirely and the lighter toned wheels are painted in 95) however i didn't like the tone so i opted for 97 for the rest of the model. That being said i still do NOT think this 97 is anymore accurate neither for Bronze Green, but it'll have to do! Also note black on the turret is actually the primer while the highlight is VA Neutral Grey:

Initial coats on the turret and things are beginning to shape up very nicely for the mean looking mbt:

Off to painting the tracks. The kit comes with 2 pairs of tracks in plastic which the modeller has to bend them into place.

As for the paint trials on the tracks, which i used enamel humbrol Sand as base color then very very thin, almost runny, VA Black Grey. Allowing the black paint to pool up on them track pads while drying resulted in a very nice worn out road going effect that you can see in the pictures. Also the "dirt" is actually clogged up enamel paint thinned and cut into pieces, then applied with the help of an old brush:

An error on my part here was not following the instruction sheet for the tracks. Bending and installing them turned out to be a hell of a job due to misaligned axles and wheels later on - i ended up realigning most of the wheel heights by removing and reinstalling them individually. I could salvage it alright however aft part of the left side track is still a bit of airborne unfortunately - also note the inconsistent track flex in between roadwheels into the cogwheels, which was the side effect of bad wheel and axle height, cramped space in the wheel wells, my lack of knowledge (them tracks must be perfectly stretched/tight no matter if the tank is stationary or mobile in order to avoid a tracked tank!) and the brittle plastic quality i mentioned earlier. In short, bending them tracks into place was the single most hardest and time consuming part of the entire build for me:

to be continued..
